Can I really recharge the 3 elements with the AA battery backup charger? Can a single battery fully charge the detector?

The XP emergency charger can only recharge one element at a time. You are advised to keep this reserve recharging system mainly for recharging the coil, which has a shorter battery life than the remote control or the headphones (10 hours compared with 22 hours).
In only 30 minutes, and using just a single 1.5 volt standard alkaline AA battery, the backup charger will charge the equivalent of 3 hours of coil operation, or 6 hours of remote control/headphones operation.
If you are in a hurry, you can recharge the detector for only 15 minutes, which will give you an additional 1 to 2 hours of detecting time.
The 1.5 volt AA battery can only be used once, as it becomes depleted very quickly in the first 30 minutes of charging, before slowly completing the charging over a further 1 to 2 hours.
Ultimately it will only recharge your coil (or remote control) partially, by about 60%, which is normally enough to complete a full day of detecting
