XP Adventures – Metal Detectives open dig

The first official XP Adventures open dig.

Everyone arrived in good spirit despite the wet conditions, parking looked like it was going to be a problem but the organisers took it in their stride and made easy work of it.
Graham and I put up the tent and the XP stand just as the rain stopped, it was really good to meet new friends and catch up with old ones.

It was especially good to see Derek Critoph at the dig, he was one of the very first XP dealers way back in 2002 when the original GoldMaxx was released, we briefly chatted and reflected on the good old days.
Great food and hot drinks were available all day from our fantastic catering team Janet’s Wood Fired Pizza

The event got underway and it wasn’t long before the finds started rolling in, Anni Byard our Oxfordshire FLO was on site to record it all, the first recorded treasure of the day was a fantastic Medieval Gold ring.
Anni our FLO never stopped working all day, every hot drink she had went cold, we even had to insist she ate something… thats dedication for you.

What really impressed me was 78 people attended the XP Adventures and the Metal Detectives dig 68 items were recorded, some of them treasure, some were found within the 14 days permitted… what a fantastic conversion,  it just proves the relationship between Archaeologists and the Metal Detectorists is very strong and in some cases re writing British History.
I managed to get a short interview with Anni, the footage will be uploaded soon.

The Metal Detectives group really do know how to hold a professional event, and full credit to their members for making them such a respected organisation.
If overseas visitors would like to attend one of our metal detecting events here in the UK please contact Mark and Karen from the Metal Detectives or myself through the XP Adventures web site.
Look out for more metal detecting events organised by the Metal Detectives and supported by XP Adventures.
Tickets for the big summer XP Gold Rally will be available soon.
